EORI Number for EU Trade: does it apply to you?
Customs (Import Duty) (EU Exit) Regulations 2018
When this applies
Importing or exporting physical goods to or from the EU requires a GB EORI number to clear customs. Get one before your next shipment, it is free but not instant, so do not leave it until goods are already in transit.
When it does not apply
EORI numbers are only needed if you move physical goods across the UK-EU border. This does not apply if you only sell digital services, or only trade within the UK.
What is at stake
Without a valid EORI number your goods cannot clear customs, you will not be able to make the customs declarations needed to move goods between Great Britain and the EU, and shipments can be delayed or turned back at the border.
What to do
Get an EORI number starting GB at gov.uk/eori before you next move goods between Great Britain and the EU, Northern Ireland or the Channel Islands. It is free and usually issued within a few working days. You need one to make customs declarations yourself, or to give to a courier or customs agent handling declarations on your behalf. Moving goods for personal use only, or goods that are not controlled goods, is exempt.
